28th Annual San Jose Day of Remembrance 2008

20 Years after Redress:
Civil Liberties and War

Sunday, Feb 17, 2008
San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin
5:30-7:30pm

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are always welcome.

This year’s event will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 and we will ask ourselves “what did it all mean?”, especially in light of protecting our civil liberties in today’s wartime environment.

The event provides an opportunity for all communities to come together in building intercommunity trust, respect, and understanding. The event features an electric performance by San Jose Taiko, the traditional candlelight procession through historic Japantown and various speakers from the community.

Featured speakers:

  • Banafsheh Akhlaghi, an Iranian-American civil liberties attorney, will address the assault on civil liberties in the wake of 9-11, the Iraq War and heightened tensions with Iran.
  • Carolyn Kameya, a local activist involved in the redress and reparations movement, will recall the grassroots effort that helped bring about the Civil Liberties Act of 1988.
  • Congressman Mike Honda, Representative of the 15th Congressional District, is a former internee of the internment camp located at Amache, Colorado.
The Nihonmachi Outreach Committee (NOC) hosts this annual event as part of our pledge to defend all people on matters of justice, equality and peace.
