ABOUT MR. HYPHEN

Mr. Hyphen turns stereotypes about Asian males on their heads. The competition is structured like a pageant with rounds of talent, fashion and Q&A in front of a sold-out crowd. Striking a blow for equal-opportunity all-in-good-fun ogling, Mr. Hyphen is an energy-filled evening of fun and charity. And to top it off, the man crowned Mr. Hyphen wins a $1,000 cash donation to his nonprofit organization. Not bad!

Since its inception in 2005, Mr. Hyphen has brought in annual crowds of more than 500 and has been covered in national media like the Associated Press. Distinguished guests have served as judges for Mr. Hyphen, including author and journalist Helen Zia, and playwright Philip Kan Gotanda.

COMMUNITY VOICE IN THE REDISTRICTING PROCESS

2nd ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER

OPEN COMMUNITY REDISTRICTING MEETING for the Bay Area

In the past redistricting has fragmented and silenced Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. In order to protect the AAPI community & present accurate State Senate and Assembly maps before the redistricting commission, the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans for Fair Redistricting (CAPAFR) is holding a series of meetings to get community input.

All are welcome! Community members who have an understanding of the AAPI community in their area are encouraged to participate. CAPAFR needs individuals who have an understanding of any pressing community issues in the San Francisco Bay Area counties.

In the 2^nd meeting, we will decide on:

1) Decision-making protocols

2) Identify factors that make up our “communities of interests”

Light food and refreshments will be provided!

District boundaries that split AAPI communities weaken the political voice & power of AAPI communities. When AAPI communities are fragmented, they do not make up a significant portion of any one district. This diminishes their ability to get their elected representatives to address their needs.

CAPAFR will conduct a series of AAPI community meetings to talk to community members about how the lines should be drawn to protect the AAPI communities. CAPAFR plans to submit proposed maps to the redistricting commission based on the community input.

To succeed, CAPAFR will need individuals who have an understanding of any of the following in the San Francisco Bay Area:

areas with large number of AAPI residents
AAPI cultural centers, including religious institutions
AAPI immigrant-related services
commercial centers for AAPI businesses
history of the AAPI communities, including refugees and service members
concerns of the AAPI communities, including housing, jobs, education, and public safety
land use restrictions, including residential and commercial zoning
education and job opportunities for AAPIs
public infrastructures including utilities and transportation
AAPI media centers
